Can you ski in October in the French Alps?
This is a question that comes up frequently — and the answer has changed in recent years. Unfortunately, due to glacier retreat, skiing in France in October is no longer possible, except in high-altitude mountaineering contexts. The glaciers at Tignes and Les Deux Alpes, which previously offered autumn skiing, have had to discontinue the practice. The French ski season now begins in late November at the highest and most snow-reliable resorts (Val Thorens), before opening more widely in mid-December. For October skiing, Switzerland and Austria remain options.
Getting around by train in October
In autumn, you travel light — no skis, no paddleboards, no heavy equipment. It is a perfect time to explore the Alps by train. Beyond the obvious environmental benefit, train travel has a different rhythm that suits October’s contemplative character perfectly.
