Situated at 1,000 metres altitude in the heart of the Vercors massif, Villard-de-Lans is a dynamic commune of over 4,000 inhabitants — effectively the capital of the Vercors. Though touristy, the village has preserved its architectural heritage and offers a convivial atmosphere year-round. In an agricultural and forest setting, open panoramas and panoramic walks along the Vercors ridges are on offer. The Villard-Correncon ski area covers 125 km of varied runs, adapted to all levels. Though at medium altitude, snowfall is generally good. It opens from late December to early April. The Villard-de-Lans alpine ski area extends across the slopes of the Balcon Est du Vercors, between 1,050 and 2,050 metres altitude. Together with Correncon-en-Vercors, it forms a coherent 125 km ski area for all levels, in a setting of fir trees and limestone ridges typical of the massif. Easily accessible from the village via the Cote 2000 gondola, the ski area offers long panoramic blue runs, fun red runs, a few technical black runs and a well-isolated beginner area. Generous sunshine and artificial snowmaking reinforce the appeal of this family ski area, popular for its relaxed atmosphere. Alternative sliding activities — snowparks, boardercross and fun pistes — complete the offering. The Haut Vercors Nordic ski area is one of the finest cross-country skiing spaces in the massif, linking Villard-de-Lans, Bois Barbu and Herbouilly through forests, clearings and high plateaus. Over 122 km of marked trails wind between 1,050 and 1,450 metres altitude, in an exceptional, preserved and often wild natural environment. The site is suited to all levels, with initiation loops, skating, classic technique and long traverses. The link between Villard and Herbouilly allows genuine full-day touring. Several access points (Bois Barbu, Valchevriere, Herbouilly) offer car parks, hire shops and star-departure trails. It is also ideal terrain for snowshoeing and Nordic walking.
