10 Largest Ski Areas in France — Linked Resorts Ranked

France is home to some of the largest and most celebrated linked ski areas in the world. Of the country’s 250 ski resorts, nearly a hundred offer interconnected domains — allowing skiers to cover dozens of kilometres of pistes without repeating a single run. From the Three Valleys, the world’s largest linked ski area, to the authentic Espace Diamant in the Beaufortain, here is our ranking of the 10 largest ski areas in France.

Key facts:

  • France excels at fully linked ski areas with ski-in/ski-out resorts — unmatched anywhere in the world for scale and convenience.
  • This guide covers the 10 largest linked ski areas in France — all located in the Alps.
  • Top 3: Les 3 Vallées (600 km of pistes), Les Portes du Soleil (600 km) and Paradiski (425 km).
  • Piste kilometre figures are commercial claims — subject to some inflation — but the relative ranking holds up well even under stricter measurement.

1. Les 3 Vallées — The World’s Largest Linked Ski Area — 600 km

With 600 km of fully interconnected pistes spread across seven high-altitude resorts, the Three Valleys is the largest linked ski area in France — and in the world. Wide, well-groomed runs, state-of-the-art lift infrastructure and exceptional panoramas from the Pointe de la Masse, Cime Caron, Saulire and Mont de la Chambre make it the benchmark for large-scale skiing anywhere. The domain ranges from the accessible and relatively affordable Brides-les-Bains, Orelle and Les Menuires to the ultra-luxury hotels of Méribel, Courchevel, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville and Val Thorens — the highest resort in Europe at 2,280 m. For British skiers, it is accessible via Chambéry Airport or by the Eurostar ski train to Moutiers.

2. Les Portes du Soleil — 600 km of Pistes Across France and Switzerland

Les Portes du Soleil — Franco-Swiss linked ski area, 600 km

Twelve village resorts spanning Haute-Savoie (France) and the Swiss canton of Valais, connected by a single lift pass covering 600 km of pistes — though some inter-resort connections require a shuttle bus rather than a ski link. What Les Portes du Soleil lacks in the seamless engineering of the Three Valleys, it compensates for in character, variety and cross-border novelty. The Mur Suisse (Swiss Wall) — a fearsome ungroomed black run back into France above Avoriaz — is one of the most famous descents in the Alps. Morzine, Les Gets, Châtel and Avoriaz are the main bases, with Avoriaz (car-free, at 1,830 m) being the most convenient for high-altitude skiing. Access: Geneva Airport (1h15 to Morzine).

3. Paradiski — 425 km — Les Arcs and La Plagne

Since 2003, the ski domains of Les Arcs and Peisey-Vallandry have been linked to La Plagne by the Vanoise Express — a double-decker cable car spanning a spectacular gorge and carrying 200 skiers per cabin. Together they form Paradiski: 425 km of pistes between 1,200 and 3,250 m altitude, with 70% of runs above 2,000 m — guaranteeing reliable snow conditions throughout the season. La Plagne is France’s largest ski resort by visitor numbers; Les Arcs is modern and ski-in/ski-out; Peisey-Vallandry offers a more authentic village feel. Access: Eurostar ski train direct to Bourg-Saint-Maurice (adjacent to Les Arcs) on selected Saturdays in season.

4. La Voie Lactée — 410 km — Montgenèvre and Italy

The Milky Way (La Voie Lactée / Via Lattea) is a vast cross-border domain linking Montgenèvre in France with Clavière, Sestrières, Sansicario and Oulx in Italy — 410 km of pistes in total. The French gateway is Montgenèvre, a handsome high-altitude village at 1,850 m on the col that marks the France-Italy border. From the French side, the commercially marketed domain covers around 110 km of pistes between Montgenèvre and Clavière; the full Italian extension is a significant bonus for those who want to explore. Access from the UK: fly to Turin (around 1h from Montgenèvre by road).

5. Les Sybelles — 310 km — Six Linked Resorts in the Maurienne

In the heart of the Maurienne valley, beneath the dramatic three-peaked Aiguilles d’Arves, Les Sybelles links six village resorts across 310 km of open, natural-feeling terrain: Saint-Jean-d’Arves, Saint-Sorlin-d’Arves, Le Corbier, La Toussuire, Les Bottières and Saint-Colomban-des-Villards. The name is a play on “six belles” — six beautiful resorts. The skiing is less flashy than the mega-domains but more natural, with wide-open panoramas and a genuine mountain atmosphere. Good for intermediate skiers who prefer space over crowds. Access: Chambéry Airport (around 1h30 by road).

6. Tignes — Val d’Isère (Espace Killy) — 300 km

The Espace Killy — named after the legendary French Olympic champion Jean-Claude Killy, who grew up in Val d’Isère — links the two resorts from late November to early May across 300 km of pistes between 1,550 and 3,440 m. Two glaciers extend the season well into spring and summer. The piste quality, lift infrastructure and grooming are among the finest in France. Val d’Isère has a beautiful stone village with luxury chalets and five-star hotels; Tignes is more modern, younger and equally high-altitude. Both are perennial favourites with British skiers. Access: Chambéry or Geneva airports, or Eurostar ski train to Bourg-Saint-Maurice.

7. Le Grand Massif — 265 km — Flaine, Samoëns and More

Le Grand Massif links five resorts — Flaine, Samoëns, Les Carroz, Morillon and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval — across 265 km of pistes between 700 and 2,500 m. The domain has a personality for each type of skier: Flaine is a modernist architectural masterpiece (designed by Marcel Breuer, the Bauhaus architect) with high-altitude, snowsure skiing; Samoëns is one of the most beautiful villages in the French Alps with a genuine town centre; Les Carroz and Morillon offer forest skiing and a more rustic character. Reliably one of the best-value large linked ski areas in France, and significantly less crowded than the Three Valleys or Paradiski. Access: Geneva Airport (approximately 1h by road).

8. Serre Chevalier Vallée — 250 km — Largest Ski Area in the Southern French Alps

The largest ski area in the Southern French Alps extends across the north-facing slopes of the Briançon valley, linking four resorts — Briançon, Villeneuve, Saint-Chaffrey and Le Monêtier-les-Bains — across 250 km of pistes between 1,200 and 2,800 m. North-facing exposure means excellent snow quality; southern sunshine means long, bright days. The combination of alpine character, reliable conditions and relatively affordable prices makes Serre Chevalier one of the most underrated large ski areas in France among British skiers. Briançon itself — a UNESCO World Heritage fortified town designed by Vauban — is a cultural bonus. Access: Turin Airport (1h45) or Grenoble (2h30).

9. Espace Alpe d’Huez — 245 km

The Espace Alpe d’Huez links the main resort with satellite stations Oz-en-Oisans, Vaujany and Auris across 245 km of pistes, reaching up to 3,300 m. The area is famous for two things above all: its exceptional sunshine record (nicknamed the “Isle of Sunshine” — it claims 300 sunny days per year) and the Sarenne — at 16 km and 2,000 m of vertical drop, the longest ski run in France. The 21-bend road climb to the resort from Bourg-d’Oisans is one of the most famous Tour de France ascents. Access: Grenoble Airport (1h15 by road) or Lyon Saint-Exupéry (2h).

10. Espace Diamant — 195 km — Authentic Skiing in the Beaufortain

Created in 2005, the Espace Diamant links the resorts of the Val d’Arly and Beaufortain across 195 km of pistes between 1,000 and 2,069 m. Village resorts like Praz-sur-Arly, Les Saisies and Hauteluce give it a character far removed from the purpose-built ski stations — open panoramas over Mont Blanc, authentic Savoyard architecture and a genuine local life away from the tourist strip. An ideal domain for families and intermediates seeking peace and scenery over scale. Access: Chambéry Airport (1h) or Eurostar ski train to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, then 30 min by road.

And Also…

Several other large linked domains deserve mention. In the Southern French Alps: La Forêt Blanche links Vars and Risoul (185 km); Espace Lumière connects Val d’Allos and Pra-Loup (180 km). In the Northern Alps: Évasion Mont Blanc links Megève, Saint-Gervais, Les Contamines, Hauteluce and Combloux (455 km, partially linked); Le Grand Domaine connects Valmorel and Saint-François-Longchamp (180 km); Galibier-Thabor links Valloire and Valmeinier (160 km); and La Rosière is linked to La Thuile in Italy as Espace San Bernardo (160 km) — one of the most convenient cross-border ski areas for UK visitors arriving via Turin.

Piste kilometre figures are the official resort data. A ✅ indicates figures within approximately 30% of independently measured data from OpenSkiMap. See note below on methodology.

A note on piste kilometres
Ski area kilometre figures are commercial claims, not independently verified measurements. A 2013 investigation found that many resorts significantly overstated their domain size — the Three Valleys, for example, was calculated at around 493 km rather than the advertised 600 km. That said, if everyone inflates by a similar factor, the relative ranking holds up reasonably well. Since the investigation, some resorts have switched to advertising skiable hectares or number of runs rather than kilometres. At Alti-Mag, we would add that the lift throughput per hour and snow reliability matter far more to the quality of a ski day than any figure on a marketing brochure.

FAQ — France’s Largest Ski Areas

How many linked ski areas are there in the French Alps?

There are 17 linked ski areas in the French Alps. Many resorts also offer large single domains of 100 km or more without cross-resort links.

Which is the largest ski area in France?

Les 3 Vallées — with 600 km of fully linked pistes across seven resorts including Courchevel, Méribel and Val Thorens — is both the largest ski area in France and the largest linked ski area in the world.

Which French ski areas exceed 400 km of pistes?

Three domains exceed 400 km: Les 3 Vallées (600 km, fully linked), Les Portes du Soleil (600 km, partially linked by shuttles) and Paradiski (425 km, fully linked). The cross-border Voie Lattea/Voie Lactée reaches 410 km including Italy from Montgenèvre.

Which are the best large linked ski areas for beginner and intermediate skiers?

Espace Diamant (195 km) and Le Grand Massif (265 km) are excellent choices — both offer a high proportion of green and blue runs, varied terrain and a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.

Do higher-altitude ski areas have better snow?

Generally yes — altitude is the most reliable predictor of snow quality and season length. Domains like Tignes–Val d’Isère and Paradiski, with 70%+ of runs above 2,000 m, are the most snowsure in France. Domain size alone says nothing about snow reliability.

Which large French ski areas are easiest to reach from the UK?

By Eurostar ski train: Les 3 Vallées (Moutiers), Paradiski and Espace Killy (Bourg-Saint-Maurice), La Rosière/Espace San Bernardo (also Bourg-Saint-Maurice). By air: Geneva Airport for Les Portes du Soleil (1h15) and Le Grand Massif (1h); Chambéry for the Three Valleys and Espace Killy.
