Overview of Aussois
Aussois strikes a fine balance between village life and tourist resort. Its stone houses with lauze-stone roofs recall Bonneval-sur-Arc, with a more open aspect onto the landscape. There is a listed Baroque church, an agropastoral museum (the Arche d’Oe), Sardinian-era forts, two EDF dams and a preserved rural heritage. Just 15 minutes from Modane, the village is organised around animated lanes, a few small shops, a human-scale tourist centre and modern infrastructure — all while maintaining a mountain atmosphere. No concrete or large housing blocks here: Aussois remains true to its soul.
The village of Aussois sits at 1,500 metres altitude, on the south-facing slopes of the Vanoise massif, in the heart of the French Alps. Its ski area extends from 1,480 to 2,670 metres. Above 2,000 metres, snow generally holds well throughout the season, while the southerly aspect brings generous sunshine. The highest point of the commune, the Pointe de la Fournache, reaches 3,642 metres.

Aussois in summer
In summer, Aussois is a playground for heritage and nature enthusiasts. Walkers reach the Vanoise national park quickly, heading to the Pointe de l’Observatoire or the Fournache refuge. Mountain biking is also on offer with several marked routes. For heritage, the Esseillon barrier, its forts and the Diable via ferrata attract families and climbers alike. The Sardières monolith and a visit to the local cheese dairy complete the experience. Below, the Arc valley and Modane offer cultural or scientific day trips, such as exploring the history of the Maginot Line fortifications.

In winter, Aussois rolls out its runs across 1,200 m of vertical descent on the sunny slopes of the Dent Parrachee. The ski area, human in scale, offers 55 km of alpine skiing and 30 km of Nordic skiing, with a link to Sollieres possible. Snowshoeing, tobogganing, biathlon and even ice climbing are also available. To vary the pleasures, the 6-day pass gives access to Valfrejus, La Norma, Val Cenis, Bessans and Bonneval. With shuttles, it is easy to explore the whole territory.
