At 2,000 metres altitude, Tignes is one of the largest French ski resorts. Its slopes are linked to those of its neighbour, Val d’Isère, creating a 300km ski area. With various sites of rather modern architecture, Tignes is sporty and festive. However, in recent years, the resort has moved upmarket with numerous luxury hotels and residences. Another particular feature of Tignes, still for a few more years: you can ski here every season! While the days of summer skiing are numbered, the resort offers the best in autumn and spring skiing.

Overview of Tignes

Situated primarily at 2,100 metres altitude, on the shores of the Lac de Tignes, the resort consists of 4 sites: Val Claret, at the top of the valley, is a modern resort of tower blocks — later supplemented by chalet-style buildings. This is where the future Club Med of over 1,000 beds is being built. The architecture is very varied, but fairly concentrated. Tignes le Lac is equally diverse but more spread out — the main resort, comprising 1960s buildings alongside fine recent hotels and chalets. Lower down, near the dam, Tignes 1800 (Les Boisses) is the most recent site, with large chalet-style residences and a church — more pleasant to look at, but quieter. Below the dam, at 1,500 metres altitude, the village of Les Brevieres is more authentic and connected to the Tignes slopes, though smaller and less lively. Tignes represents the pinnacle of skiing in France: state-of-the-art ski lifts, wide runs groomed to perfection and incredible high-mountain landscapes.

When to visit

Tignes in summer

In summer, Tignes is one of the rare high-altitude resorts with a genuinely dynamic offering. There are numerous activities: mountain biking, hiking, glacier walks and many lake-side activities. However, at over 2,000 metres altitude, it may not be particularly warm. If you are escaping a heatwave, all the better — if not, bear it in mind.

Tignes in winter

In winter, people come to Tignes for skiing above all — and a certain idea of alpine art de vivre, made of parties and long ski descents. Tignes has a large ski area linked to Val d’Isere, with XXL runs between 1,550 and 3,456 metres altitude. If Tignes is open from October to May, it is because its ski area is exceptionally well-snowed. Precipitation is no more abundant than elsewhere, but the altitude and aspect allow the snow to be preserved excellently. The connection between the two resorts is fluid, and touring skiing is possible from Tignes to the Col de l’Iseran — over 15 km in one direction. The ski area also has 2 snowparks, 2 glaciers, 8 fun runs and 3 boardercross courses. Off-slope activities are plentiful: pedestrian and snowshoe trails, ice diving, the Lagon aquatic centre, an igloo village, snow tubing, tobogganing and dog sledding.

Skiing at Tignes and Val d’Isere takes place across a large linked ski area of nearly 300 km of runs. At the gateway to the Italian border, it is high-mountain skiing with 2 skiable glaciers between the Vanoise and Gran Paradiso national parks. The ski area reaches 3,456 metres at the Grande Motte glacier (Tignes) and 3,240 m at the Pissaillas glacier (Val d’Isere). The ski area spans over 50 km2. Predominantly technical, the ski area remains accessible to average skiers. It has 161 runs — 56% blue and green, 44% red and black — across 8 sectors: Bellevarde, Solaise, Fornet/Iseran, Pissaillas, Toviere, Grande Motte, Palet and Aiguille Percee. With 60% of runs above 2,200 m, snow reliability is excellent. Must-dos include: the view from the summit of the Grande Motte, the crossing of the Col de l’Iseran, the Arcelle descent (Solaise — Manchet valley), and the mythical Bellevarde run.
