Overview of La Mongie – Grand Tourmalet
La Mongie is the eastern slope and the modern hub of the Grand Tourmalet ski area. Born in the 1960s, the resort was designed for skiers: large apartment blocks and residences are built directly on the ski area base, allowing ski-in ski-out access throughout. This functional architecture contrasts with the charm of the traditional village of Bareges, on the other side of the Col du Tourmalet (closed in winter). The ski area on the La Mongie side is mainly open terrain at altitude, offering wide sunny runs and spectacular panoramas over the surrounding summits. It is also from La Mongie that the cable car departs for the Pic du Midi de Bigorre (2,877 m) — a major tourist attraction and also one of the finest freeride ski areas in the world. The resort is therefore a perfect base camp for skiers of all levels, from families to experts seeking thrills.

In summer, La Mongie becomes the mecca for cyclists. The resort is the ideal starting point for the ascent of the mythical Col du Tourmalet — a Tour de France essential.
