Overview of Courchevel
Spread across several villages along a winding road, Courchevel is France’s most exclusive ski resort. Yet it cannot be reduced to ultra-luxury alone. The resort preserves from its origins several social tourism facilities and perfectly accessible residences. In fact, it is mainly at the top — at Courchevel 1850 and the Jardin Alpin — that luxury concentrates. All linked to the XXL Les 3 Vallees ski area, the various Courchevel sites offer very different atmospheres:
Courchevel 1850 is the top of the resort. Well-snowed, this site concentrates virtually all of the luxury offering: gourmet restaurants, luxury hotels, serviced chalets, palaces, art galleries and boutiques. Many properties here are ski-in ski-out.
Courchevel 1650 (Moriond) and Courchevel 1550 (Village) are two levels made up of residences and chalets organised around their ski area bases. Less luxurious and more family-oriented, these villages reflect the original architecture, alongside the spirit of the large timber-and-stone chalet of the last 30 years. Between the two, Aquamotion is the largest high-altitude aquatic centre — directly linked to a 4-star hotel.
Le Praz and Saint-Bon are Courchevel’s authentic villages, with their small chalets and narrow lanes, offering a more peaceful and genuine village atmosphere. Only Le Praz is ski-in ski-out. Saint-Bon is connected to the slopes by shuttle and has its own return run.
La Tania is a pedestrian ski resort created for the 1992 Winter Olympics, recently incorporated into the commune of Courchevel. It consists of residences surrounding a ski area base topped by chalets. Less lively than Courchevel, La Tania is primarily a base for skiing the world’s largest ski area. It does however have a Michelin-starred restaurant run by former Top Chef candidate Julien Machet.

When to visit
Courchevel in summer
In summer, Courchevel lacks the appeal it has in winter. Most of the luxury hotels are closed and building works make the place less welcoming. However, the resort retains the charms of the mountains in summer with far more accessible prices. The Lac de la Rosiere and the proximity of the Vanoise national park reserves are among the resort’s summer attractions. It is also worth noting that the Col de la Loze has become one of Courchevel’s summer draws for climbing cyclists, following several Tour de France finishes there.

Skiing at Courchevel means access to the world’s largest alpine ski area: Les 3 Vallees (600 km of runs), shared with Meribel, Les Menuires, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, Val Thorens and Orelle. It offers endless high-altitude skiing on wide, well-groomed pistes. Several connection points allow smooth and efficient transitions between ski areas. Accessible to all, the domain includes 190 green and blue runs alongside 149 red and black pistes. Up high, the panoramas are exceptional, ranging from Mont Blanc to the Ecrins across the Vanoise summits. It is possible to choose the Courchevel-only pass for 150 km of runs — though the price difference is minimal.
