Serre Chevalier is a four-season destination combining high mountains, heritage and wide open spaces. Spread between 1,350m and 2,800m, it brings together the fortified town of Briançon, UNESCO World Heritage-listed, and the villages of Monêtier-les-Bains, Villeneuve-La-Salle and Chantemerle. In winter, it’s one of the largest ski areas in the Southern Alps, with 250km of slopes and regular snow cover. In summer, the Guisane valley becomes a vast adventure playground, between mountain biking, hiking, hot springs, watersports and heritage. Here, the contrast between wild nature and town-centre buzz makes the resort unique.

Overview of Serre Chevalier

Between 1,200 and 1,500 metres altitude, Serre Chevalier strings its beautiful villages along the Guisane valley. At the bottom, the hilltop city of Briancon — with its 10,000 inhabitants — is the highest town in France. Its Vauban-style fortifications earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. The Serre Chevalier ski area extends across the north-facing slopes of the Guisane valley, with a predominantly north and north-east aspect (catching the morning sun) and a small south-facing sector at Prorel. Authentic and dynamic, Serre Chevalier is multifaceted, with its historic urban heart in Briancon and its beautiful villages at La Salle-les-Alpes, Saint-Chaffrey and Le Monetier-les-Bains.

Serre Chevalier in summer

Summer at Serre Chevalier is the kingdom of the outdoors. People come for the hiking trails, the mythical passes (Galibier, Granon, Lautaret, Izoard), mountain biking routes through larch forests and vertiginous via ferrata. The Villeneuve lake, the Grands Bains du Monetier thermal baths and summer events punctuate the days. Briancon, with its UNESCO-listed historic centre, is a major attraction. For families: adventure park, pump track, the Lautaret alpine botanical garden and easy walks in the nearby Claree valley.

Serre Chevalier in winter

In winter, Serre Chevalier attracts visitors for its diverse ski area, clement weather and open landscapes. Skiing is available between larch trees, high pastures and mountain summits across 250 km of runs. Off-piste skiing (Cucumelle sector), a snowpark and snowshoe routes diversify the offering. For relaxation, Briancon adds an urban dimension, while Le Monetier invites visitors to unwind in its Grands Bains natural hot spring pool. Apres-ski is enjoyed between good restaurants, a local atmosphere and illuminated heritage sites. With 250 km of runs, Serre Chevalier offers the largest ski area in the Southern French Alps, with 80% of its runs above 2,000 m and a third equipped with snow cannons.

The skiing caters for all levels: wide runs at Chantemerle, technical sectors towards Le Monetier and well-laid-out beginner zones.
