Located right at the end of the Maurienne valley, overlooked by the glaciers and peaks of the Vanoise, Bonneval-sur-Arc is a village listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Its mineral atmosphere, stone slate roofs, cobbled streets and calm make it a place out of time. In winter, it’s also a human-scale ski resort, with 32km of alpine ski slopes and generous snow cover from December to late April. Cross-country skiers head to the Nordic area at Bessans, a few kilometres away, with its 133km of trails.

Overview of Bonneval sur Arc
In the Alps, villages belonging to the Most Beautiful Villages of France association can be counted on one hand. Bonneval-sur-Arc is one of them — alongside Saint-Veran. Bonneval is a high-altitude village of solid stone houses covered in wide lauze-stone slabs — those flat stone tiles sometimes used in mountain zones. At 1,800 metres, where forests struggle to establish themselves, stone was simply the only local material available. It has shaped the rugged and timeless streetscape of Bonneval. In winter, its rooftops often bear imposing layers of snow, from which the village bell tower emerges. The resort is subject to easterly weather patterns — sometimes abundant snowfall that spills over from the Italian border. The traditional houses of Bonneval are squat, built in dressed stone bound with lime, with narrow windows. On the south side, a covered wooden balcony called a galerie was used to dry and store sheep-dung briquettes, formerly used for heating. Comfort, however, has improved considerably today.

The Bonneval-sur-Arc alpine ski area extends from 1,800 metres at the village to 3,000 metres at the summit of the runs. With 32 km of runs, it is ideal for all levels. Skiing at Bessans takes place on 133 km of cross-country ski trails — a touring or sporty experience very different from alpine skiing. The vast Bessans plateau is perfectly suited to this. The trails wind around the village along the Arc river, which descends the entire Maurienne valley for 140 km. Unlike traditional Nordic ski areas, the Bessans ski area has very few forested sections. It is however particularly cold in the mornings, as it is situated in the valley floor. When conditions allow, it is possible to ski to Bonneval-sur-Arc from Bessans, or vice versa. A trail also climbs into the wild Averole valley.
