This was one of the cross-country skiing venues for the 1968 Grenoble Winter Olympics. From that era, the resort inherited 180km of wide, quality ski trails. While snow cover can sometimes be limited at village level, the Gève area, between 1,300m and 1,600m altitude, often holds snow very well from December to April. With 40km of alpine skiing, the resort is also an ideal destination for natural, family-friendly skiing. As for village life, Autrans and Méaudre are two lively Vercors villages where farming still plays a major role.

Overview of Autrans-Méaudre en Vercors

Set on a wide plateau at the northern tip of the Vercors, Autrans and Meaudre are two villages that merged to form a single commune. Both are sporty, mountain-minded, lively, with a slightly urban edge and a still very active farming community. Just 45 minutes from Grenoble, many residents commute to the city for work. A Nordic skiing stronghold, Autrans-Meaudre also has two alpine ski areas of around 20 km of runs each. In short, Autrans-Meaudre is a family-friendly mid-mountain destination, ideal for slow-ski enthusiasts who care about the environment. Farms here still produce the milk used to make Saint-Marcellin and Bleu du Vercors-Sassenage — the latter used to make Vercouline, a far better and more digestible version of raclette.

When winter blankets the Vercors in white, Autrans-Meaudre becomes a mecca for cross-country skiing. With 180 km of Nordic trails, the resort hosts the Foulée Blanche, an iconic race drawing thousands of participants each year. Alpine skiers are catered for with two family-friendly ski areas. Thrill-seekers can try biathlon or hurtle down the slopes on snow tubes. For alpine skiing enthusiasts, the resort offers two ski areas, one per village. In Meaudre, an 18 km alpine ski area is accessible to both beginners and expert skiers. Between 1,000 and 1,600 metres altitude, east and north-facing, it is a forest ski area with 17 runs departing from the village. In Autrans, at the end of the Sure road, the alpine ski area offers 20 km of west-facing runs with skiing accessible to beginners as well as a good proportion of technical skiing. With a day alpine ski pass at 21 euros, the villages above all offer financially accessible, family-friendly skiing — far from what you find in the large resorts.

Skiing at Autrans-Meaudre takes place on nearly 180 km of connected cross-country trails spread between the 2 villages. The ski area gravitates across the plateau around the villages and on the better-snowed high-altitude sites of Geve and La Moliere. From Autrans (1,042 m) or Meaudre, you can ski or use a chairlift up to La Moliere (1,632 m) — the highest point of the ski area. Primarily forested, it offers some sunny clearings and a fine open plateau around the villages when snow conditions allow.
