French alps in june: where to go at the start of summer

June is when the French Alps truly come into their own for summer. The mountain passes reopen one by one, the high alpine meadows explode into flower, lake temperatures climb to swimming level and the light — with the longest days of the year around the summer solstice — is extraordinary. Critically for UK visitors, July and August crowds have not yet arrived: trails are quiet, accommodation is easy to find and prices are well below the summer peak. If you want the Alps at their most beautiful and most accessible, June is the answer.

⛰️ Key points:

  • Weather and landscape: June brings the longest days of the year. Flowered alpine meadows, reopened mountain passes and 25–28°C in the lake towns make it an exceptional month for outdoor activity.
  • The hiking month: June is the best month for walking and trekking in the Alps — trails are snow-free below 2,500 m, flowers are at their peak and the mountain huts are open.
  • Lakes before the crowds: Annecy, Lac du Bourget, Lake Geneva, Serre-Ponçon — water temperatures reach 20°C, beaches are almost empty on weekdays and lakeside restaurants are in full swing.
  • Great value: accommodation in June is significantly cheaper than July or August — self-catered apartments from around €350 per week in many resorts.
  • Wild camping and campervan travel: June is ideal for first wild camps of the summer season — alpine flowers, marmots and near-total solitude above 2,000 m.

Weather in the French Alps in June

June is reliably warm across the French Alps — one of the best months of the year in terms of sunshine, temperature and landscape. In valley towns and by the lakes, temperatures regularly reach 25–28°C. At mid-altitude (around 1,500 m), expect a pleasant 20°C — ideal for walking and cycling without the heat of high summer. With the summer solstice, daylight extends to 9.30 pm: you can hike, cycle or sit on a terrace until near-darkness.

Rainfall in June is moderate — the Northern Alps are wetter than the south, with Chambéry averaging 94 mm versus Embrun’s 61 mm. Rain typically arrives as afternoon thunderstorms rather than sustained grey days. For the most reliable sunshine, the Southern Alps (Hautes-Alpes, Haute-Provence) are the safer bet — Embrun gets 265 hours of June sunshine, significantly more than London’s typical summer months.

Hiking in the French Alps in June

June is without question the best hiking month in the French Alps. The alpine flora is at its absolute peak — meadows carpeted with gentians, narcissi, orchids and anemones, with the last snow patches receding day by day. Marmots are visible on every slope. The mountain huts (refuges) are open and the trails are quiet before the July influx.

One altitude caveat: above 2,500 m on north-facing terrain, snow patches (névés) can persist in June, making some high passes and ridge trails slippery or requiring poles. Above 2,600–2,800 m, summits are not accessible on foot without snow and ice equipment. The sweet spot for June hiking is 1,200–2,400 m — which covers the vast majority of the classic trail network.

Best areas for hiking in June

  • Le Vercors and La Chartreuse (near Grenoble): ideal for day walks and multi-day treks at medium altitude, fully snow-free in June, with extraordinarily lush vegetation — the Vercors in particular is one of the most underrated hiking destinations in France. The vast limestone plateaux are paradise for trekkers and first wild camps of the season.
  • Le Queyras (Hautes-Alpes): under the reliable sunshine of the Southern Alps, this regional natural park is exceptional in June. Maximum solar hours, dramatic contrasts between vivid green meadows and last snow patches, and very few other walkers. One of the finest mountain areas in France — and largely unknown to international visitors.
  • The Mont Blanc massif (Haute-Savoie): the balcony trails above the Arve valley open from mid-June, offering extraordinary views of the glaciers. Highlights include the Désert de Platé, Mont Joly, the Lac d’Anterne (excellent wild camp) and the Vallon de Doran below the Pointe Percée. The Tour du Mont Blanc typically becomes viable from mid-to-late June, depending on the year’s snowpack.

The Alpine lakes in June: before the summer crowds

Lake Annecy in June — warm water, empty beaches and mountain backdrop
Lake Annecy in June — swimming-warm water, beaches still quiet

The great Alpine lakes — Annecy, Lac du Bourget, Lake Geneva, Serre-Ponçon, Sainte-Croix — reach swimming temperature in June (around 20°C at the surface), the lakeside restaurants and beach bars open and the atmosphere is relaxed and local. This is the lakes before the crowds: beaches are virtually empty on weekdays, parking is easy and the water is clear.

Lake Annecy is one of the finest lake destinations in Europe in June — the old town is animated, the 40 km lakeside cycle path is glorious in the long June light, and the backdrop of snow-capped Aravis peaks makes it one of the most photogenic scenes in France. Lac du Bourget (Aix-les-Bains) has a Riviera quality in June, with boat trips to the Abbaye d’Hautecombe and the spa town fully operational. Serre-Ponçon and Sainte-Croix in the Southern Alps offer turquoise water, reliable sunshine and a more remote, wilder atmosphere.

Where to stay by the lake in June

  • Lac du Bourget: La Maison des Pêcheurs — a charming small hotel on stilts above the lake, on the cycle path, ideal for exploring Aix-les-Bains and the Bauges massif.
  • Lake Annecy: the Pelican (new hotel, lake view, old town gateway) or the Rivage & Spa (4-star modern spa hotel on the lakeside). For a genuinely exceptional lakeside stay, the Black Bass (5-star, contemporary, gastronomic restaurant, directly on the water at Sévrier) is one of the finest addresses in the French Alps.
  • Embrun / Lac de Serre-Ponçon: La Robeyere — a converted 18th-century manor house turned 4-star hotel with spa, between the old town of Embrun and the lake.
  • Glamping by the lake or river: Huttopia — the leading French eco-camping brand — operates sites at Lac d’Aiguebelette, the Verdon gorges and near Vallouise in the Écrins. Fully equipped trapper tents, wooden chalets and roulottes (gypsy caravans) available. Aiguebelette · Verdon · Vallouise

Mountain villages and altitude hotels in June

Beaufort village in June — authentic alpine village in full summer green
Beaufort in June — one of the most authentic Savoie villages, fully alive before the summer peak

The authentic Alpine villages are at their finest in June: the ski season crowds are gone, summer tourists have not yet arrived and the villages are genuinely alive — local markets, artisan workshops, good restaurants and the particular quality of mountain life before the high season. Good village bases for June include Samoëns, Arêches-Beaufort, Hauteluce, Les Gets, La Clusaz, Aussois, Montgenèvre and Serre Chevalier.

Chamonix and Megève are the most active centres in the Northern Alps in June. Chamonix in particular is excellent: the Aiguille du Midi cable car and Montenvers cog railway run year-round, giving access to spectacular glacier scenery within minutes of the valley floor. The QC Terme spa (one of the finest spa experiences in the Alps) is open year-round. And the walking above the valley — from mid-June — is among the best in France.

For thermal spa experiences in June: Saint-Gervais (thermal spa, pool, patinoire — one of the best-equipped spa towns in the Alps), Châtel (Forme d’Ô), Chamonix (QC Terme) and Serre Chevalier (Les Grands Bains) are all open and far less busy than in high season.

Hotels open in June at altitude

  • Saint-Gervais: Saint Gervais Hôtel & Spa (new 4-star, Art Nouveau inspiration, open from June) · La Féline Blanche (design 3-star in the village centre) · L’Armancette (5-star chalet hotel at Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce, Mont Blanc views).
  • Chamonix: Rocky Pop (fun, colourful 4-star, excellent value in June) · Plan B (hybrid hotel/hostel, excellent for solo travellers and groups) · Folie Douce Hôtel (lively atmosphere, central location). See our full Chamonix hotel guide.
  • Briançon / Serre Chevalier: Le Monêtier — excellent year-round hotel adjacent to the Grands Bains thermal spa, Southern Alps sunshine, open and quiet in June.
  • Alpine villages: La Ferme du Chozal (Hauteluce, 4-star family hotel, opens from 10 June) · Neige et Roc (Samoëns, 4-star Savoyard style, pool, spa) · Alta Peyra (Saint-Véran, France’s highest village, spa, gastronomic restaurant, open from 3 June at very attractive June prices).

Wild camping and campervan travel in June

Campervan in the French Alps in June — exploring the mountains before the summer crowds
Campervan travel in the French Alps in June — mountain passes open, roads quiet

June is the finest month for wild camping in the French Alps. Above 2,000 m, the combination of flowering meadows, thawing mountain lakes, returning wildlife and near-total solitude creates a wilderness experience that disappears in July when the summer crowds arrive. Nights are still cool (bring proper mountain sleeping equipment), but the rewards — marmots at dawn, glacial views, exceptional stargazing — more than compensate.

Five exceptional wild camp spots for June

  • Lac d’Anterne (Haute-Savoie, 2,063 m): a classic June bivouac in the Sixt-Passy nature reserve, facing the Fiz cliffs and the Mont Blanc massif. The alpine meadows surrounding the lake are at their most spectacular in June.
  • Plateau du Vercors (Drôme/Isère): the Hauts Plateaux nature reserve is ideal for an immersive June camp — no high summits (so no snow), steppe-like open landscape and extraordinary stargazing. Note: water sources are scarce, carry enough.
  • Lac des Cerces (Savoie/Hautes-Alpes, 2,410 m): perched above Valloire, best from the second half of June when the last névés have melted. The panorama at sunset over the Aiguilles d’Arves and Grand Galibier is exceptional.
  • Plateau d’Emparis (Isère/Hautes-Alpes, 2,000 m): one of the finest viewpoints in Europe — facing the spectacular glaciers of La Meije. The plateau is generally snow-free in June and covered in a carpet of spring flowers.
  • Lac Miroir (Queyras, 2,210 m): the Southern Alps sunshine means this lake is accessible earlier than comparable Northern Alps spots. The reflection of the peaks on the water at sunrise is one of the great June alpine experiences.

For those who prefer comfort with flexibility, a campervan is the ideal way to explore the Alps in June. Campsites are open but uncrowded, mountain passes are opening week by week and the freedom to follow good weather is particularly valuable. A classic June itinerary: one night above Annecy (Semnoz), the lakeside the next day, then Chamonix (night facing Mont Blanc), through to the Vanoise via Italy, and down to the Serre-Ponçon lake shores. Campervan rental is available through platforms like Yescapa and from local agencies in Annecy, Chambéry and Grenoble.
