Villar d’Arene is a typical mountain village, clustered around its bell tower, with narrow lanes and thick stone houses. At 1,650 m, on the right bank of the Romanche, it preserves an ancient architecture perfectly integrated into the alpine landscape. No recent apartment blocks or residences here. The buildings are tall stone houses, sometimes lime-rendered. The church of Saint-Martin, at the centre of the village, structures the space around a mineral square, often snow-covered in winter. The Maison du Parc National des Ecrins — very well designed — highlights local history, fauna, flora and mountain traditions. The hamlet of Pied du Col, a little higher up, extends this end-of-the-world atmosphere with a balcony view over the mountains. In summer, the lanes come alive. In winter, snow softens the lines and creates a muffled atmosphere.

In summer, Villar d’Arene is an ideal starting point for walkers, alpinists and cyclists. No ski lifts or expensive lift passes here — just a well-maintained Nordic ski area, marked snowshoe trails and a village that remains alive even in low season. People come to cross-country ski on the loops following the Romanche, in a muffled atmosphere, often alone on the trails. The ski area is well maintained, with classic and skating pistes, a pedestrian loop and a snowshoe route. Children can learn to slide safely in the fun zone near the village. For more sporty visitors, La Grave is 5 minutes by car, with its mythical freeride area. Le Chazelet, also nearby, offers gentle alpine skiing. The Villar d’Arene Nordic ski area (also known as the Pays de la Meije domain) extends at the foot of the village, along the Romanche river, between open high pastures and scattered copses. It offers around ten kilometres of classic and skating trails, with loops of progressive difficulty. The altitude (1,650 m) guarantees good snow cover throughout the winter, often until March. The main route follows the river in a grandiose setting facing the summits of the Meije massif. A groomed pedestrian route, a snowshoe route and a fun initiation zone are also available.
